My Story

Hi, I’m Zach.

I started Whitcomb Insurance Advising to give people a straight answer about their health coverage from someone who will actually put their name on it.

Health insurance is confusing on purpose — too many options, too much fine print, and advisors who steer you toward whatever pays them the most. I built Whitcomb Insurance Advising to do the opposite: sit down with individuals, families, self-employed professionals, and small business owners, understand what actually matters to them, and then shop across private and ACA Marketplace plans to find the one that fits.

I’m independently licensed and appointed with major carriers — including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield — which means I’m not stuck recommending one company’s plan regardless of whether it’s the best option for you. My job is to compare, explain the trade-offs in plain English, and help you land on coverage you actually understand.

I believe trust should be earned, not assumed. That’s exactly why every credential I hold — license, NPN, and carrier appointments — is posted here and independently checkable. See the Verify My License page for the specifics.

How I Got Here

Before insurance, I spent years learning how to actually help people.

I’m a graduate of Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts, and long before I thought about insurance, I was working in food service. It’s not glamorous work, but it teaches you fast that people remember exactly how you treated them — especially on a bad day. That lesson stuck with me more than almost anything else from those years.

After college, I went to work in city government as an assistant to the Mayor of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. That job put me in the room for the real work of helping a place get better — sitting down with residents and small business owners, hearing what they actually needed, and pushing forward projects that were part of revitalizing our downtown. Watching a community come back to life, one conversation and one project at a time, is what genuinely ignited my passion for helping people. It wasn’t abstract to me — I could see the difference it made in people’s daily lives, and I wanted to keep being part of that.

Moving into insurance felt like a natural continuation of that same drive, just at a more personal scale. Instead of helping revitalize a city, I get to sit down with one person or one family at a time and help them get real, affordable health coverage — something that can matter just as much to them as any city project mattered to Fitchburg. Food service, city hall, and now my own agency all have the same thread running through them: I want to actually help, not just go through the motions.
